Steve Kerr

Steve has been a key part of the YMCA Northumberland team for over 15 years, bringing dedication, hands-on skills, and a friendly face to everything he does. As our Caretaker, he keeps the building running smoothly by setting up for events, handling repairs, decorating, and making sure everything stays clean, safe, and welcoming for staff and visitors.

Before joining us, Steve studied interpersonal skills and business administration at college, but quickly realised that practical, hands-on work was more his style. With a background in DIY, painting, plastering, and general maintenance. He’s always ready to roll up his sleeves and get stuck in.

Steve’s easygoing, chatty nature makes him a familiar and well-loved presence around the building. He’s known for his sense of humour, his willingness to help, and his ability to lift the mood of any room. Whether it’s solving a problem on the spot or offering support to a colleague, Steve brings warmth, reliability, and team spirit to everything he does.

One of Steve’s proudest achievements is seeing how far the organisation has come and how many young people have grown in confidence during their time here. It means a lot to him to be part of something that truly makes a difference.

Outside of work, Steve enjoys reading, writing poetry, and exploring history. He’s also full of surprises—despite his admin qualifications, he’s happiest fixing things or tackling a project head-on. He credits his dad as his biggest inspiration: a kind, funny man who always saw the bright side and lent a hand to anyone in need.

Ask Steve to describe himself, and he’ll say “noisy, funny, and accident-prone”, and that’s just part of the charm. His journey with YMCA Northumberland has been one of growth, resilience, and community, and we’re proud to have him as such a valued member of the team.
