More Than Volunteering: Adam’s Journey with the YMCA

Adam has been attending our 13–18 year old youth sessions for some time and, keen to give back, took the opportunity to volunteer at our younger Youth Café sessions. With a positive attitude and a genuine passion for supporting others, Adam is always willing to help, whether that’s getting involved in music sessions, hosting showcases, or supporting our younger group during weekly activities. His enthusiasm, reliability, and readiness to step in wherever needed make him a valued member of YMCA Northumberland.

Adam’s journey began through friends and social media, but it was his own experience attending youth sessions that truly shaped his path. Having seen first-hand, the positive impact that our sessions can have, Adam felt motivated to give back and support other young people in the same way.

Now a committed volunteer at our Youth Café sessions for 10–13 year olds, Adam plays an important role in creating a welcoming, safe, and engaging environment. One of the things he enjoys most is the chance to connect with young people through meaningful conversations—and plenty of good banter—which helps build trust and confidence.

When asked about the skills needed to work with this age group, Adam highlights resilience, problem solving, and emotional regulation and co-regulation as essential qualities. Remaining calm, friendly, and approachable allows young people to feel supported and understood, even during challenging moments.

A particularly rewarding part of Adam’s volunteering experience has been witnessing the growth of young people over time. “It is lovely to see many of the young people mature in various ways since their first sessions, it’s great to watch them blossom,” he shares.

Adam is also studying early years childcare and has clear ambitions to work in roles that support and empower others. Since joining the YMCA, he has volunteered significant hours with our youth cafe project and has taken on a key role as a Literacy Champion, following training with the National Literacy Trust. Through this role, Adam has developed strong communication and active listening skills, adapting his approach to suit different ages, abilities, and confidence levels.

Ricky Murray, Young People’s Service Manager at YMCA Northumberland, reflects on Adam’s contribution:

“Since joining the YMCA, Adam has demonstrated clear personal and professional development. Arriving as an accomplished musician with a positive, caring attitude, he quickly became a valued contributor to sessions, supporting both creative delivery and positive group dynamics.

He consistently demonstrates calm behaviour support and an understanding of appropriate boundaries, contributing to a safe and welcoming environment. Adam works collaboratively with staff and volunteers, shows professionalism and reliability, and is increasingly confident in supporting and leading small group activities.

He is viewed as a trusted and valued member of the team, making a meaningful contribution to the ongoing success of the Youth Café while continuing to develop safeguarding awareness, reflective practice, and confidence in his work with young people.”

For anyone considering volunteering with YMCA Northumberland, Adam’s message is clear:
“Absolutely do it!!! It is a great learning experience and there is fun to be had.”

We are incredibly grateful for Adam’s dedication and the positive impact he continues to make within our Youth Café and wider YMCA community.
