How Did the YMCA Start?

The YMCA was founded in 1844 in London by a young man named George Williams. George was a 22-year-old draper (a worker in a fabric and clothing shop) who had moved to the city for work. In London, he found that many young men, like himself, faced challenging living and working conditions. Long work hours, crowded and unhealthy living environments, and limited opportunities for wholesome activities left many men vulnerable to urban temptations and poor health.

George and a group of like-minded friends, began meeting to support each other in staying committed to their Christian faith and avoiding the negative influences of city life. They held prayer meetings and Bible studies in their homes. Eventually, they formalised their efforts into the “Young Men’s Christian Association,” with a mission to offer a safe space for spiritual and personal growth. The group’s motto became “healthy body, mind, and spirit,” which reflected its commitment to holistic well-being.

The YMCA grew rapidly. Within a few years, it spread across Europe and into North America, becoming a movement that adapted to meet the needs of each local community. By the late 1800s, it had become known for promoting physical fitness, introducing gyms and organised sports, including basketball and volleyball which were both invented at YMCAs in the United States.
