A Story of Resilience: How YMCA Northumberland Is Powering a Safer Future for Ashington

At YMCA Northumberland, we’ve always believed that strong communities are built on connection, support, and resilience. For more than 150 years, our North View building has been a place where people come to learn, grow, and belong. Today, we’re taking an important step forward to ensure we can continue serving our community when we’re needed most.

When Storm Arwen struck Northumberland, Ashington experienced widespread power outages that left homes, businesses, and community spaces without electricity for days. Like many organisations across the region, we witnessed firsthand how vulnerable communities can become when essential services are disrupted.

The experience reinforced something we already knew: resilience isn’t just important, it’s essential.

That’s why we’re delighted to have received a grant of £19,846 from the Northern Powergrid Foundation to install solar panels and battery storage at our North View site. This investment will enable us to become a more energy-resilient community hub, capable of remaining operational during future power interruptions.

The installation of solar panels and battery storage means we will be able to generate and store our own renewable energy, helping us keep our doors open when the community needs us most. In the event of a power outage, we’ll be able to continue providing a warm, safe, and welcoming space for local residents, young people, families, and vulnerable members of our community.

Beyond supporting local people during emergencies, our site will also be able to serve as an operational base for emergency response efforts, helping maintain vital coordination and support services during periods of disruption.

However, this project is about much more than emergency preparedness.

We see this initiative as an opportunity for young people to see sustainable technology in action. We want families to understand the benefits renewable energy can bring. Most importantly, we want our community to feel empowered to be part of the transition to a more sustainable future.

As our Chief ExecutiveDirector, Rob Cox, explains:

This project builds on that legacy, helping ensure that YMCA Northumberland remains a place of safety, opportunity, and hope. Not only in everyday life, but during the most challenging times as well.
